While campaigning for President in 2008, Barack Obama proposed a new direction in American strategy that would reverse the erroneous foreign policy choices of his predecessor, President George W. Bush. Senator Obama designed a strategy to ostensibly rewrite the United States’ relationship with the world and offer the American people ‘change that we can believe in’. Obama articulated such a vision in his 2007 article in Foreign Affairs, ‘Renewing American Leadership’, and presidential debates with Senator John McCain. The then Senator Obama outlined the numerous challenges the world faced and argued for ‘a new vision of [American] leadership in the twenty-first century’ that would simultaneously draw from the past but not be ‘bound by outdated thinking’.
