Yasmin commenced her doctoral studies at the NSC in February 2017. She holds a BA (Global), Post Graduate Diploma in European and International Studies as well as a Master of Arts by Research from Monash University and a Master of Diplomacy from ANU. Yasmin has professional and voluntary experience working in the delivery of programs and development of policies in the humanitarian, multicultural and multi-faith space.

The dissertation explores the dialectal relationship between foreign aid and development, the war economy in failed and weak states. It aims to analyse contemporary discourses on the complex instersectionality of these key determinants of sustainable peace in an ever changing geopolitical counterterrorism landscape in Somalia.
The research is a study of the effects of foreign aid on terrorism. The research aims to: (i) critically evaluate the relationship between foreign aid and terrorism in Somalia; (ii) understand the mechanisms through which foreign aid is used as a counter-terrorism tool in Somalia; and (iii) investigate under what conditions can foreign aid, primarily military aid, undermine or strengthen a recipient state’s responses to terrorism.
