Statement on the passing of Margaret Stone

The staff and community of the ANU National Security College are saddened to learn of the passing of The Honourable Margaret Stone AO FAAL earlier this month.

Ms. Stone, an alumna of the ANU, led a career of outstanding service to her country, as a legal scholar, a senior member of Australia’s judiciary, and as the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS), a role she held until late 2020.

Ms. Stone’s service as the IGIS was carried out with her characteristic tenacity, good-humour, and fairness. The example of her work and wisdom made her an inspiration and mentor for many junior members of the legal and intelligence professions. Ms. Stone was of particular inspiration to young women in Australia’s national security and legal communities. She was generous with her knowledge and insight, including as a presenter to courses at the NSC.

Her distinguished service in Australia’s courts, including as a Judge of the Federal Court, and her time overseeing the National Intelligence Community is a singular contribution to a just, fair and secure society.

We share our condolences with her family.
