National Security Futures Conference: Powered by People
1-2 April, 2020 – Hyatt Hotel, Canberra
The National Security College is hosting a major, international conference on national security futures. The conference theme – Powered by People – reflects our conviction that people and societies are frontline actors in national security matters. The social realm can be a source of strategic surprise, and of resilience and dynamism. We want to subvert one common approach to futures analysis: an emphasis on technology and geopolitics that leaves people out of focus.
This event will focus on where in the social realm we might find black swans, black elephants, and sources of strategic surprise and how can we adapt our institutions, policy settings, and national security capabilities to ensure resilience – and relevance – in the face of social disruption and discontinuity.
We have assembled over 15 leading thinkers and practitioners from across Australia and the globe with diverse backgrounds – including experts in activism, democracy, economics, ethics, fiction, history, international relations, journalism, law, politics, security and intelligence, and technology.
Nanjala Nayabola - James Clapper - Dino Patti Djalal - Prue Clark - Ketty Chen - Toomas Hendrik Ilves - Peter Greste - Samanta Hofman - John Birmingham - Tom Nichols - Raihan Ismail - and more…
Join us to discuss futures of: • democracy • authoritarianism • dissent • identity • the public square & the media • technology, culture & power • resilience & social cohesion.
The conference will be a centrepiece of our 10-year anniversary celebrations – and we look forward to you joining the discussion!
